Google is helping nightlife seekers easily track down local restaurants and nightclubs with Zagat, which provides ratings and reviews based on customer surveys. Google announced the relaunch of the Zagat website and mobile app for Android and iPhone in the summer of 2013. One of the new features of this relaunch will be the appearance of editorial videos and curated lists of local establishments for searches such as “best organic food in San Francisco.”
Zagat, which has rated restaurants with a 30 point system since its inception in 1979, was acquired by Google in 2011 after the search giant was unable to purchase Yelp, a slightly different type of local business review site. Zagat reviews show up in Google Search results when users search for restaurants in their area. Zagat bases its point totals on several factors including price, service and decor.
The philosophy of Zagat is that customer reviews give other consumers a more accurate portrayal of real life experiences than traditional journalistic reviews. The Zagat website is populated with a collection of blogs about restaurants and comments by site users. Reviews range from witty to serious. This system is particularly useful to travelers who may not want to experiment with the unknown in cities they have not visited before. They can save time and money by considering authentic customer reviews.
Businesses who want to be listed in Zagat can submit their information by visiting Zagat.com. The app can be downloaded for free directly from the site. The app lets users view establishments and neighboring businesses on a map. It also allows you to filter your search by customer scores.
The rollout of the new Zagat site and app has initially started in a select group of U.S. cities including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and Austin. It is also available in London. The site also has a link for “all our locations” that includes other major cities. Google is planning on expanding its Zagat coverage to 50 other U.S. cities with ratings and reviews for shops, hotels and other public places.
